Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get started?
Hello! I am Yoshiko, the person behind @calligrafusion . I was born and raised in Japan, now living in NC in the US. I started lettering because I wanted to draw pretty letters for holiday cards so nothing serious. Discovering wonderful online art/calligraphy communities grew my passion. I started practicing seriously and posting my work on Instagram from late 2018. Since then, my art journey has been really great. I’m so grateful that I have met wonderful artists and have been working with amazing art supply companies.

What do you love most about being a lettering artist/calligrapher?
I really enjoy making custom orders which are often for customer’s special occasions such as anniversaries or celebrations. I’m really happy that my lettering is a small part of them.
I like lettering positive quotes because we all have been through tough times, especially the past few years. When people tell me that my lettering brightens them up, I feel really happy. They are just letters but they could be more than just letters.

I adopted a rescue dog last year. He is very cute and funny so I want to spend time with him as much as I can. He loves sleeping between my legs while I’m lying on the couch sketching or drawing.
My father is a Japanese calligraphy teacher so I was always surrounded by a lot of brushes, ink and paper. He taught me Japanese calligraphy when I was a kid but I eventually stopped practicing. When I saw brush calligraphy for the first time on Instagram, I felt nostalgic and immediately fell in love with it. It is a different kind of calligraphy but I’m glad that calligraphy became part of my life again.
