VersaChalk Artist of the Month this September - @littleletterscreates

Tell us a little about yourself.  How did you get started?

Hi, my name is Lydia! I own Little Letters which is based in the small island of Guernsey, Channel Islands (in between England and France). I create handwritten signs, home décor and wedding/event signage. Mainly working with wood, however acrylic, slate and chalkboards often occur. Most of my work is created from scratch, using reclaimed wood, which I take and cut, sand, treat, stain and then write on. A woodwork calligraphy business if you will.

Little Letters started as a result of needing a creative outlet, following each day as a Visual Impairment Support Worker in a Special Needs Primary School. I have always been fascinated by fonts and various writing styles, attempting to copy words and phrases. I then found my preferred writing style, as a modern calligrapher and from then on, orders were placed and Little Letters came to life. I am constantly teaching myself through daily practise, videos and customer orders which continues to help me grow and progress as an artist- and that is something I never want to stop doing!

What do you love most about being a lettering artist/calligrapher?

Being able to create a unique piece for a customer which is so personal to them. I love that I get to be part of that, especially for weddings! Each sign has its own details and elements to make it one of a kind. There are also so many varied lettering styles so my pieces can work for any occasion, age, gender etc.. There are signs for everyone!

What do you like to do in your spare time / Fun facts about yourself!

I’m such a summer person, so a lot of my time is spent at the beach, lots of paddleboarding, watching sunsets (while eating fish n chips of course!). I also love to stay active and explore new places, whether that’s in Guernsey or an adventure to a new country.
