Artist Spotlight: Bryan Dungate, Chalkboard Artist by Default

Being immersed in art at an early age came naturally to this week's Artist Spotlight featured artist, Bryan Dungate. But even when he knew that artistry flows in him, he still dedicated a great deal of time to learning his craft—creating chalkboard art for restaurants and commercial spaces. Let's get to know Bryan more!

Can you tell us 3 interesting facts about yourself?

  • I have a large reclaimed wood collection.
  • I used to be obsessed with ice box hardware.
  • I write programs for CNC machines.

Can you tell us more about how you became the artist you are today?

My Father was an art teacher for 30 years and always brought home materials for me and my sister to mess around with. I became an artist by default.

How did you start doing chalkboard art, What kind of chalkboard art do you specialize in?

I started with menu and specialty boards. I'm still very young in this medium (2 yrs). Mostly menu boards still.

Apart from liquid chalk markers, what media do you use in making art?

Pen and ink, wood, Sharpie markers, cameras, percussion instruments.

What inspired you to make what you did with @versachalk?

I constantly have ideas and images running through my head.

What makes good art? How long did it take for you to get “good” at it?

Good art comes from patience and process. It took a long time (decades) to get to where I am.

Words of advice for up-and-coming artists?

Take your time, but don't overthink the process or idea. Pick a line and go with it.
