This Lady's Love for Chalkboard Art Became More Than a Hobby

"Make your passion your profession." We might have heard this line in a feel- good Indian movie that became a global hit. This week's Artist Spotlight featured artist is Tori Turner, owner of Fine Print & Company, who understood and took that mantra to heart. Let's get to know her better and find out how creating chalkboard art, which was once her hobby, became a business and a promising career.

Can you tell us 3 interesting facts about yourself?

I have only taken one art class—in 8th grade. I love dogs, and I have a freckle in my right eye!

Can you tell us more about how you became the artist you are today?

At the beginning of 2017, I had an epiphany; I can express myself best by doing what I love. I did just that. I started investing my time in modern calligraphy and chalkboard art and it eventually became more than a hobby.

How did you start doing chalkboard art? What kind of chalkboard art do you specialize in?

I have always had good handwriting (my mom was a teacher, I had no other choice). In 2015, one of my close friends was getting married and asked if I would write on a few signs. I jumped at the opportunity with every dreamy chalkboard Pinterest post in mind. The signs turned out great and I have been making them for others ever since.
I really enjoy doing chalkboard art for weddings. There is just something about the beginning of a new chapter of life that inspires me. Doing chalkboard art for weddings also allows me to express my creativity in all sorts of ways; from the dinner menu, table numbers, welcome sign and of course the Mr. & Mrs. sign. Each bride pictures their wedding day as the best day of their life, and I am honored to be a part of it.

Apart from liquid chalk markers, what media do you use in making art?

Liquid chalk markers are my go-to for almost any surface. On the off chance that they don't display well enough, I turn to a paint marker or other some sort of permanent marker.

What inspired you to make what you did with @versachalk?

Like I mentioned above, the beginning of a new chapter of life inspires me most. Versachalk markers make it easy for me to achieve the vision I have for whatever piece I am working on.

What makes good art? How long did it take for you to get “good” at it?

For me, practice makes the best art. I have gone through so many markers and pens used just for practicing. I would say that I started getting good this year. I am still working on getting "good" at modern calligraphy and chalk art, there is always room for improvement.

Words of advice for up-and-coming artists?

As an artist, it is import to connect with other artists. Share your inspirations with others, tell them what brought you to this particular art piece. Finally, even when you get "good" at it, you still need to practice.
